Any exercise is good for your body.
But, no other activity also has the profound effects on your brain that cycling does. Increased oxygen flow is like a natural fertilizer for growth and repair. Cycling also creates serotonin, dopamine and even cannabinoids (yup, cannabinoids – the naturally occurring kind). Each one is key in contributing to a feeling of well-being and reducing anxiety and depression. Add in the rhythmic or meditative nature of cycling, and the positive effects on mental health can’t be beat.
But, hey, science is hard and full of big words. Let’s just skip to this simple experiment instead:
Next time you’re angry, go for a bike ride. We bet you come back calm.
Next time you’re tired, go for a bike ride. We bet you come back with a new energy.
Next time you’re confused, go for a bike ride. We bet you come back with answers.
Of course, sometimes our best efforts at maintaining positive mental health are simply not enough. At that time, please seek out professional help.
